College Preparation Made Simple — Your Questions Answered
When should I take the PSAT to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program?
Take the PSAT/NMSQT in October of 11th grade to qualify. (10th grade = practice only)
What is the ideal time to take the SAT?
First attempt: spring of 10th grade if the student has completed Algebra 1. Second attempt in the fall of 11th grade.
How and when do I register for AP Exams?

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty, while a weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB classes to reflect their added rigor. Colleges do value rigor in a transcript.
Which clubs/organizations should I join for leadership and academics?
Debate, Science Olympiad, Math Club, Robotics, Coding, DECA, FBLA, HOSA, Model UN, Student Council, Key Club, Interact, NHS — all of these should be aligned with the student's intended college major.

Leadership roles, long-term involvement, awards & competitions, volunteering with real impact, and personal projects or research.
Where can I find good volunteer opportunities?
Libraries, hospitals, food banks, and animal shelters; school clubs such as Key Club, NHS, and Interact; and online platforms for service opportunities.
